South Foster Union Chapel
a.k.a. Hopkins Mills Union Chapel
The South Foster Union Chapel Society is a non profit organization that relies on donations, and fundraising events to keep the Meeting House running. Many Foster residents know the Meeting House as "Hopkins Mills Union Chapel." The first meeting of the Chapel Society was held on May 1, 1871 at the Meeting House. This was made possible by the men and women of Foster who wanted a place to worship regardless of the denomination abd a place to gather for various occasions. They wanted a place where all members of the community could go for religious and non-religious purposes.
Unfortunately, the Meeting House has fallen on hard times. One could say that after 140 years, some serious repairs would be inevitable. The work required to keep the Meeting House open has become too great a project for the active members to fix. Despite the efforts of all the members who have worked so hard to keep the Meeting House open, it is still in need of serious repair. A roof was put on a couple of years ago thanks to the Champlin Foundation and the members who worked diligently to secure the grant and make repairs on the Meeting House along the way.
